Raised bed gardening is not a new concept. In fact, it is an idea that has been used for hundreds and hundreds of years. What did people do when they did not have good soil to plant in or they were surrounded by hard clay or concrete? They built up! Creating a raised bed is quite easy and you can even purchase some that are ready made or even transform old, recycled items for your purpose.

Basically a raised bed for gardening is similar to planter boxes except on a larger scale. And best of all, raised beds can follow virtually any shape you wish. If you only have a postage stamp size yard because of excess concrete patio space, you can build a raised bed on a section of that concrete. If you have "lost" space in your yard that is not conducive to dragging a tiller to break up the ground for gardening, you could place a raised bed there.

The traditional raised bed is typically a simple wooden frame lined with heavy plastic or special garden liner which blocks weed development. This frame with liner is then filled with soil, typically the soil that greenhouses use for optimal plant growth. From there, you can then plant whatever you want in this raised bed.

Old tires are perfect for recycling for use as a raised bed. You would staple a liner to the rubber so that you have an enclosed space to fill with soil for planting. The best part about a raised by is that you can build to your conformed area, like that "lost" part of your yard. You can purchase a raised bed pre-made or you can build your own with little effort.

The main advantage to a raised garden is the fact that you do not have to dig into substandard soil or drag out a tiller to break up the ground. You also don't have to worry too much about weeding as the soil you add will be from a bag and usually weed seed free. What few weeds you go get will pull out easily. Add the fact that a raised bed offers better drainage and you have a winning combination for your gardening.
